Machu Picchu is perhaps one of the most visited destinations in Peru and South America as a whole. The main reason why most visitors visit Peru is for the world’s wonder Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. And, it truly is A-MA-ZING… it’s worth the journey. Honestly, I was a little anxious at the beginning that the majestic Machu Picchu would be underwhelmed and disappointed. But that feeling evaporated as soon as I enter. It feels so surreal to step into the lost city of Inca for the very first time.

What makes Machu Picchu stunning is not only the citadel itself… but also the spectacular mountains that surround it. The view is breathtaking. There is a mysterious and mystic feeling that can’t be avoided when we explore Machu Picchu. Especially when the fog is present around the mountains. And it adds the overall wonders around Machu Picchu. The whole experience is unforgettable. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. And in 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Machu Picchu with Kids

The fantastic news is that you can bring your kids to Machu Picchu. And, visit Machu Picchu is also very educational for both kids and adults alike. It is essential to hire a knowledgeable guide. We had an excellent guide. He was very passionate about explaining everything about Machu Picchu and Inca history.

Our son has learned a lot about the history of Machu Picchu and Inca during our visit. He is impressed by how the Inca built Machu Picchu from giant stones without cement… how the Inca cut those stones into finest precisions with only simple traditional tools… how the citadel was constructed in certain degrees to stand earthquakes. And still so much more. Plus, of course, he truly adores those cute llamas.

There are two ways to go to Machu Picchu, by train or trekking. In my opinion, the most suitable way for families with kids is by taking a scenic Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes town – 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘶 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘶 𝘗𝘶𝘦𝘣𝘭𝘰 (from either Cusco or Ollantaytambo). Then take a designated bus to the Machu Picchu entry point.

We started our visit to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo town. Stayed there for a few nights to acclimate to the altitude. We also stayed in Aguas Calientes for two nights, before and after our visit day to Machu Picchu. That’s how we made our trip, and we truly enjoyed our journey without being overwhelmed, over-tired, and rushed.
