This Great White North country is also abundant with fantastic wildlife. Do you know that Churchill, Manitoba, is the polar bear capital of the world? Aside from this stunning nature, Canada is also blessed with a rich culture, friendly people, delicious foods, and ice wines. Try some poutine, maple syrup, and butter tart. Have I mentioned that Canada is a vast country with six different time zones? In fact, it is the second biggest country in the world. You may spend months exploring the whole country. CANADA AT A GLANCE

𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗗𝗔 𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗚𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘

Most of the North America region consists of three big countries and one large island territory. They are Canada, the USA, Mexico, and Greenland. And, there are also Central America (with seven countries), the Caribbean (with around two dozen countries), plus one isolated French territory (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon - off the Canadian Atlantic Coast). We have split up our travel guides, so we'll primarily be referring to the major countries of North America here.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗗𝗔

Canada spans six different time zones from the west coast to the east coast, plus four different time zones of Greenland. You could imagine how huge is the size of this beautiful continent. Because of its massive size, there is always a great destination for every season in North America. So, the best time to visit North America depends on what you like to see and do.

.

🔸 𝙎𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 (March to May) is the mark of a warmer season. During these months, the weather is getting warmer in most places, and daylights are also getting longer. Spring on the west coast arrives earlier compared to the eastern and northern parts of Canada. There are a lot of things to see and do throughout the country.

.

It is a breathtaking scene to see when spring flowers bloom everywhere. Vancouver is home to over 40,000 cherry trees, which burst into pink and white blooms between mid-March and April. The Canadian Tulip Festival takes place in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, around the second week of May annually. This is one of the largest tulip festivals in the world. Magnolia is my favorite spring flower, and it is magical to see the whole tree covers in pink.

.

You should experience Sugar Bush when visiting Canada in the spring months. This is maple syrup harvest season, and you could visit maple farms and enjoy the farm tours where you will learn how maple syrup is produced. Also, take a tractor ride and sip freshly made maple taffy which is a fun activity for adults and kids alike.

.

More adventurous families could enjoy Canada’s spring ice break-up this season. Yes, believe it or not, it is so cold in parts of Canada that the ocean actually freezes. The best places to witness this spectacular scenery are the Atlantic ocean shores - the eastern coast of Canada. For wildlife lovers, whale watching season in Nova Scotia and Quebec starts in May. Another region to experience this activity is Tofino in Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

.

🔸 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 (June to August) is the busiest month and peak season for tourists in Canada. The weather is getting pleasantly warmer across the nation, and more extended daylight is perfect for many outdoor activities. Due to the further north in the hemisphere, humidity is rarely a significant problem in Canada. However, summer is the most expensive season to travel due to many people traveling these months.

.

However, please note that hiking in some places in North America during the hottest summer months could be dangerous. Always pay attention to the weather, climate, and humidity before doing any outdoor activities.

.

See whales in their natural environment is another unforgettable experience for both adults and kids alike. Summer months are considered a peak season to encounter these intelligent mammals in many places in North America. Some of the best whale-watching destinations are Hudson Bay-Manitoba, Quebec’s Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, Newfoundland, and Vancouver Island-British Columbia.

.

.

🔸 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡 (September to November) is another shoulder season and great months to travel in Canada. Again, the weather is still pleasantly warm and comfortable for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The summer crowd has left. Thus prices also drop to a more reasonable point. In fact, autumn is my favorite season... it is magical to witness fall foliage when leaves change color to vivid yellow, orange, and red. Canada is the best place to enjoy fall color, okay I may be biased, but it is true 🙂

.

If you ever want to go polar bears safari and see them in their natural habitat, visit Churchill town in Manitoba, Canada. After all, Churchill town is known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World. While it is possible to see polar bears in the summer months. The best months to do it are October and November, where you hop into a particular tundra vehicle..

Aside from hiking and enjoying outdoor sports, apple picking can be a family activity too in the autumn. Another great thing to do in the fall is finding giant pumpkins in pumpkin patches across Canada. Kids could have fun in the corn mazes, riding farm tractors, and having delicious homemade apple pies.

.

🔸 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 (December to February) is the perfect time to hit some slopes for skiing, skating, snow tubing, dog sledding, ice fishing, and other winter activities. The northern part of the continent is the best place to have winter getaways. Also, Canada boasts some of the world's biggest and best winter festivals this season.

.

If you feel adventurous, stay overnight in the Ice Hotel in Quebec for the most unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Or you could go chasing and experiencing the Aurora Borealis. Be sure to check the Northern Light tracker before hunting for these phenomenal lights. The best places in Canada are Yukon, Northwest Territory, Churchill-Manitoba, and the Canadian Rockies.

.

Some ideas for fun family winter activities are building a snow fort, make a snowman, tobogganing, make a snow angel, or have a snowball fight. Winter hiking could be fun too. Be sure to bundle up and wear proper winter attire. All of these activities are only fun when you stay warm outside.

It's also sometimes called affordable luxury hotels. The meaning of mid-range hotels may differ a bit, but it generally ranges from 3-stars to 4-stars hotels. Most of the time, mid-range hotels and resorts are often preferred by families. Because these hotels are the perfect combination of value-for-money, comfort, and locations. They are more affordable compared to luxury hotels but still offer great amenities.

.

Canada has a plentiful supply of this category, from major cities and smaller cities to beach towns. Here are some ideas for family-friendly mid-range hotels and resorts in every country across Canada:

Who says a family vacation has to be expensive? There are plenty of affordable and budget-friendly hotels for families across Canada. These hotels may not have luxurious services and amenities, but they still provide clean rooms and meet basic needs. Extra amenities may be available for an additional cost. Most budget hotels fall into the category of 2-stars to 3-stars hotels.

.

Now, what are family-friendly hostels? Are they even available? Yes, they do exist. Hostels are great to connect and socialize with. Unfortunately, hostels have a lousy reputation only for solo party travelers. There are actually many different types of hostels, including family hostels and boutique hostels. Family-friendly hostels usually offer special family rooms, kid-friendly activities, and sometimes a well-organized kitchen. As a family, yes, you want to stay away from any party hostels.

Below is a list of budget-friendly hotels and hostels in Canada that are suitable for families:

When making travel plans with kids, there are extra things to consider. You want to make sure the accommodations are comforting, relaxing, and feeling like a home. Having access to a well-designed kitchen is also another thing to consider for a family vacation. This is where Airbnb and vacation homes come to fill the gap instead of hotels and resorts. Be sure to book family-friendly accommodations by applying these kid-approved filters like playhouses, indoor slides, kiddie pools, sprawling lawns, and even babysitter recommendations. BEST FOODS TO EAT

𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧-𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗗𝗔

Canada is widely known for its stunning landscapes, one of the safest and peaceful countries on earth, and other amazing things. Even though Canada is not the most popular foodie destination, there are numerous must-eats across the Great North starting from east to west. Here I only list five must-try Canadian foods while traveling:

.

𝙋𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚 - From many culinary gems to come out of Canada, poutine is perhaps one of the most outlandish and definitive Canadian dishes. Poutine is made of crispy fries and squeaky cheese curds, then topped with rich gravy. The classic version is great on its own. Add toppings like pulled pork, bacon, and smoked meat to really elevate poutine to the next level. Unfortunately, not all poutines are made the same. The best place to get poutine is in Montreal, Quebec.

.

𝙈𝙖𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙎𝙮𝙧𝙪𝙥 - Almost everyone knows this. Maple syrup is a thick amber-colored syrup made from the sap of maple trees. It is more often served on waffles, crepes, and pancakes. Oh, you also should try Maple Taffy when you travel to Canada during sugar bush season. This sugary sweet candy is prepared by pouring boiling maple syrup over snow. The cold causes it to immediately harden. It is then rolled up with a popsicle stick and enjoy right away. The result is a rich maple flavor with a soft and gooey texture. It truly does not get more Canadian than maple taffy (tire d’érable - in French).

.

𝙋𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙣 - Also known as Canadian bacon. Peameal bacon is made of lean boneless pork loin, trimmed, wet-cured, and then rolled in cornmeal, giving its distinctive yellow crust. It is definitely leaner, healthier, and more delicious than traditional bacon. The best place to try peameal bacon sandwiches is in Toronto’s St. Lawrence market.

.

𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙠 - Bannock is a simple flatbread that was once an essential staple in the diets of Canada’s Aboriginal people. Modern bannock includes baked versions (which are heavy and dense) and fried versions (crispy and fluffy on the inside). Bannock is incredibly delicious and versatile. It can be sweet (eat with butter or jam) or savory (eat with bacon or any meats). In recent years, bannock has seen a surge in popularity, with new twists and variations popping up in bakeries and cafes nationwide. You have to try it.

.

𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨 - No, it’s not a real beaver’s tail. Beavertails is a sweet made of deep-fried dough, flattened to resemble a beavertail and covered in various sweet toppings of your choice. Popular toppings are banana slices, cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut spreads, peanut butter, and more. While it’s not exactly the healthiest dessert, beavertails are gooey, crispy, and a taste of true perfection. No visit to Canada is complete without one!

.

𝙄𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙚 - A bonus list. Have you heard and tried ice wine yet? You definitely should. It’s one the best wines, which Canada is world-famous for. Ice wine is a sweet dessert wine made from frozen grapes harvested during the coldest winter months. It’s super sweet, hard to make, and a source of Canadian pride nationwide.

WHAT TO PACK & WEAR

𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧

What to pack and wear dramatically depends on where you go, when you go, and what activities you do on your vacation. The packing guides in this section are essential must-have items for almost every trip. It works for most seasons, except for the colder winter region and winter getaway, which requires a different packing list.
