NORTH AMERICA AT A GLANCE

Most of the North America region consists of three big countries and one large island territory. They are Canada, the USA, Mexico, and Greenland. And, there are also Central America (with seven countries), the Caribbean (with around two dozen countries), plus one isolated French territory (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon - off the Canadian Atlantic Coast). We split up our travel guides, so I primarily refer to the four major countries of North America on this travel guide.

Canada is a beautiful country with an absolutely stunning landscape. From the famous Canadian rocky mountains and rainforests on the West Coast to the beautiful beaches on the East Coast. It is outdoor activity heaven, from chasing the Northern Light to skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and just wandering around to admire the unspoiled natural beauty.
.

This Great White North country is also abundant with fantastic wildlife. Do you know that Churchill, Manitoba, is the polar bear capital of the world? Aside from this stunning nature, Canada is also blessed with a rich culture, friendly people, delicious foods, and ice wines. Try some poutine, maple syrup, and butter tart. You also should taste some super fresh lobster in Shediac, Nova Scotia. The town is known as the Lobster Capital of the World.

.

Have I mentioned that Canada is a vast country with six different time zones? In fact, it is the second biggest country in the world. You may spend months exploring the whole country. Moreover, Canada is our home. We live in the country and are still not able to explore the entire country. It is on our bucket list to travel Canada from coast to coast.

.

🔸  𝗠𝗘𝗫𝗜𝗖𝗢

Mexico is home to tacos, tequila, mezcal, white sand beaches, "Chichen Itza" one of the world's wonders, 35 Unesco World Heritage sites, Mayan ruins, and colorful colonial towns. There are so many things to do and see in this vibrant country. Cancun and Baja California are famous for their beach gateway and watersport activities. When you are hungry for some tasty local Mexican foods, hit Oaxaca city and Puebla town. Or you may want to explore colorful colonials towns like Merida, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and many more.

.

🔸  𝗨𝗦𝗔

The United States of America offers gorgeous landscapes from coast to coast. There is literally so much to see, do, eat, and experience for every type of traveler. The travel opportunities in this vast country are endless, where each state offers something unique and different. With so many scenic drives across the country, the USA is best experienced by road-tripping, where you could hop on and hop off anywhere you like.

.

You can go to the north and see glaciers in Alaska, catch some waves in Hawaii, hike those incredible canyons in Arizona and Utah. If you want something different, head east to New York City for a cosmopolitan experience. For nature lovers, explore some of the beautiful national parks is a great idea. There are a whopping 63 designated national parks across the USA. And for historical enthusiasts, the country has 24 UNESCO heritage sites and growing.

.

🔸  𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗

Greenland is still a relatively unknown country to many, but yes, it does exist. This beautiful country is almost entirely covered by icefields. In fact, it actually poses the world's second-largest ice sheet. But there is more of Greenland than just glaciers and icebergs. The Inuit are fascinating and friendly people with exciting cultures to learn from. They are very proud of their heritage, it's shown from the way they live to these days.

.

In recent years, Greenland has started to emerge as an arctic destination. Nature is pristine, where you can actually drink the water directly from any stream. This polar country has the most spectacular and dramatic glacier landscapes in the world. Greenland has been high on my bucket list for quite a while. I hope to travel there soon.

.

Where exactly is Greenland located on the map, you ask? It's located in the northern hemisphere, between the East Coast of Canada and Iceland. Because of its remote location, anyone traveling to the nation has to fly from Iceland or Denmark. There are no direct flights from North America. So, it is a good idea to combine trips to Iceland and Greenland.

.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

North America spans six different time zones from the west coast to the east coast, plus four different time zones of Greenland. You could imagine how huge is the size of this beautiful continent. Because of its massive size, there is always a great destination for every season in North America. So, the best time to visit North America depends on what you like to see and do.

.

🔸 𝙎𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 (March to May) is the mark of a warm season. It is generally a good time to explore North America from coast to coast. Except for most regions in Canada and Greenland, the cold winter season is extended due to its location to further north of the globe.

.

During these months, the weather is getting warmer in most places, and daylights are also getting longer. It is one of the most beautiful seasons when spring flowers are blooming beautifully everywhere. If you are a cherry blossom lover like me, visit Washington DC in early April when it’s literally pink with Sakura. It’s a magical sight to enjoy.

.

Mexico typically experiences a peak during the Spring break week, both crowds and prices. Many people and families go on vacation to get a break after the dreaded cold winter months and the school holiday week. I must admit that I love traveling in the spring months, but not precisely during the spring break week.

.

🔸 𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙧 (June to August) is peak-season and busiest months in most North American regions. The warm weather and more extended daylight are perfect for many outdoor activities. But humidity could be a challenge in the south part of the continent.

.

However, please note that hiking in some places in North America during the hottest summer months could be dangerous. Always pay attention to the weather, climate, and humidity before doing any outdoor activities.

.

If visiting Greenland is on your bucket list, summer is the perfect month to experience the country's natural beauty with activities like cycling, hiking, or kayaking. Summer is also great to explore Canada and Alaska unless you plan skiing and winter activities.

.

See whales in their natural environment is another unforgettable experience for both adults and kids alike. Summer months are considered a peak season to encounter these intelligent mammals in many places in North America. Some of the best whale-watching destinations are Hudson Bay-Manitoba, Quebec’s Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, Anthony-Newfoundland, North Cape Cod-Massachusetts, Juneau-Alaska, Vancouver Island-British Columbia, and San Juan Islands-Washington.

.

It is also possible to see whales at different times of the year on other sides of the continent. For instance, Baja Sur-Mexico is primed to see whales in the winter months. Please make sure to always pick responsible tour guides and operators, as they will not disturb the wildlife in any way possible.

.

Summer is usually one of the most expensive seasons to travel due to many people traveling these months.

.

🔸 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡 (September to November) is another shoulder season and great months to travel across North America. Again, the weather is still pleasantly warm and comfortable for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The summer crowd has left. Thus prices also drop to a more reasonable point. Except for Mexico, it’s experiencing hurricane season from July to October, with September and October usually the most active months. The temperature in Greenland drops significantly during autumn, and some places may experience the first snowfall by the end of October.

.

Fall is one of the most vibrant seasons where foliage changes color to vivid yellow, orange, and red. The view is spectacular. Some best places to experience fall foliage in North America are New England in the USA, the Canadian East Coast, Quebec, and Ontario. Follow fall color trackers to make sure you get there in time at peak color. Autumn is my favorite season of the year, especially during fall foliage. And leaf pepping is my favorite activity. Yes, leaf pepping is a thing.

.

If you ever want to go polar bears safari and see them in their natural habitat, visit Churchill town in Manitoba, Canada. After all, Churchill town is known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World. While it is possible to see polar bears in the summer months. The best months to do it are October and November, where you hop into a particular tundra vehicle.

.

Aside from hiking and enjoying outdoor sports, apple picking can be a family activity too in the autumn. Another great thing to do in the fall is finding giant pumpkins in pumpkin patches across Canada and the USA. Kids could have fun in the corn mazes, riding farm tractors, and having delicious homemade apple pies.

.

🔸 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 (December to February) is the perfect time to hit some slopes for skiing, skating, snow tubing, dog sledding, ice fishing, and other winter activities. The northern part of the continent is the best place to have winter getaways. Also, Canada boasts some of the world's biggest and best winter festivals this season.

.

If you feel adventurous, stay overnight in the Ice Hotel for the most unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Or you could go chasing and experiencing the Aurora Borealis. Be sure to check the Northern Light tracker before hunting for these phenomenal lights. The best places in North America for Northern Light are Alaska, Greenland, and Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territory, Churchill Manitoba, Canadian Rockies).

.

Some ideas for fun family winter activities are building a snow fort, make a snowman, tobogganing, make a snow angel, or have a snowball fight. Winter hiking could be fun too. Be sure to bundle up and wear proper winter attire. All of these activities are only fun when you stay warm outside.

It's also sometimes called affordable luxury hotels. The meaning of mid-range hotels may differ a bit, but it generally ranges from 3-stars to 4-stars hotels. And yes, you could find some affordable all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. Most of the time, mid-range hotels and resorts are often preferred by families. Because these hotels are the perfect combination of value-for-money, comfort, and locations. They are more affordable compared to luxury hotels but still offer great amenities.

.

North American countries have a plentiful supply of this category, from major cities and smaller cities to beach towns. Here are some ideas for family-friendly mid-range hotels and resorts in every country across North America:

Who says a family vacation has to be expensive? There are plenty of affordable and budget-friendly hotels for families across North America. These hotels may not have luxurious services and amenities, but they still provide clean rooms and meet basic needs. Extra amenities may be available for an additional cost. Most budget hotels fall into the category of 2-stars to 3-stars hotels.

.

Now, what are family-friendly hostels? Are they even available? Yes, they do exist. Hostels are great to connect and socialize with. Unfortunately, hostels have a lousy reputation only for solo party travelers. There are actually many different types of hostels, including family hostels and boutique hostels. Family-friendly hostels usually offer special family rooms, kid-friendly activities, and sometimes a well-organized kitchen. As a family, yes, you want to stay away from any party hostels.

When making travel plans with kids, there are extra things to consider. You want to make sure the accommodations are comforting, relaxing, and feeling like a home. Having access to a well-designed kitchen is also another thing to consider for a family vacation. This is where Airbnb and vacation homes come to fill the gap instead of hotels and resorts. Be sure to book family-friendly accommodations by applying these kid-approved filters like playhouses, indoor slides, kiddie pools, sprawling lawns, and even babysitter recommendations. 𝙋𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚 - From many culinary gems to come out of Canada, poutine is perhaps one of the most outlandish and definitive Canadian dishes. Poutine is made of crispy fries and squeaky cheese curds, then topped with rich gravy. The classic version is great on its own. Add toppings like pulled pork, bacon, and smoked meat to really elevate poutine to the next level. Unfortunately, not all poutines are made the same. The best place to get poutine is in Montreal, Quebec.

.

𝙈𝙖𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙎𝙮𝙧𝙪𝙥 - Almost everyone knows this. Maple syrup is a thick amber-colored syrup made from the sap of maple trees. It is more often served on waffles, crepes, and pancakes. Oh, you also should try Maple Taffy when you travel to Canada during sugar bush season. This sugary sweet candy is prepared by pouring boiling maple syrup over snow. The cold causes it to immediately harden. It is then rolled up with a popsicle stick and enjoy right away. The result is a rich maple flavor with a soft and gooey texture. It truly does not get more Canadian than maple taffy (tire d’érable - in French).

.

𝙋𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙣 - Also known as Canadian bacon. Peameal bacon is made of lean boneless pork loin, trimmed, wet-cured, and then rolled in cornmeal, giving its distinctive yellow crust. It is definitely leaner, healthier, and more delicious than traditional bacon. The best place to try peameal bacon sandwiches is in Toronto’s St. Lawrence market.

.

𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙘𝙠 - Bannock is a simple flatbread that was once an essential staple in the diets of Canada’s Aboriginal people. Modern bannock includes baked versions (which are heavy and dense) and fried versions (crispy and fluffy on the inside). Bannock is incredibly delicious and versatile. It can be sweet (eat with butter or jam) or savory (eat with bacon or any meats). In recent years, bannock has seen a surge in popularity, with new twists and variations popping up in bakeries and cafes nationwide. You have to try it.

.

𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙨 - No, it’s not a real beaver’s tail. Beavertails is a sweet made of deep-fried dough, flattened to resemble a beavertail and covered in various sweet toppings of your choice. Popular toppings are banana slices, cinnamon, chocolate hazelnut spreads, peanut butter, and more. While it’s not exactly the healthiest dessert, beavertails are gooey, crispy, and a taste of true perfection. No visit to Canada is complete without one!

.

𝙄𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙚 - A bonus list. Have you heard and tried ice wine yet? You definitely should. It’s one the best wines, which Canada is world-famous for. Ice wine is a sweet dessert wine made from frozen grapes harvested during the coldest winter months. It’s super sweet, hard to make, and a source of Canadian pride nationwide.

Eating in Mexico is a real treat and something you definitely shouldn’t miss. There’s something special about Mexican food flavors. There are so many delicious Mexican foods. And You can find them at any street food vendors, in marketplaces, and at many restaurants in the country. Here I list five must-try authentic Mexican foods while traveling in the country:

.

𝙏𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙨 - Mexican tacos are most commonly made using small corn tortillas filling with the meat of choice. Some of my favorite meats include al pastor (pork shavings), chorizo (pork sausage), and carne asada (beef slices). Then, topped with cilantro, onion, and an obligatory dash of lime. You may have eaten tacos where you live, but eating tacos in the country where it was born is a totally different experience. There are literally endless types of tacos across Mexico, and they are all delicious.

.

𝙈𝙤𝙡𝙚 - Pronounced Mol-eh. It is essentially the national dish of Mexico, one of the most unique and authentic Mexican food to try. Mole is a traditional richly textured sauce from certain parts of Mexico that may date back 500 years. It uses over 40 different ingredients, and the process of making authentic mole from scratch takes days. Yes, days. The ultra-flavorful mole will elevate anything it’s served with. It could be eaten over chicken, beef, rice, enchiladas, eggs, or a base for taco fillings. My favorite is the Oaxacan mole negro, which tastes on a sweeter side.

.

𝘾𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙖 𝙋𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙡 - Pronounced Ko-chin-ee-ta Pee-beel. Cochinita Pibil is a shredded braised pork dish that originally comes from the Yucatan region. It can be served in many different ways. You can eat it as a taco filling or serve over rice garnished with cilantro and lime wedges.

.

𝙏𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨 - Tamales are corn-based dough filled with a savory or sweet filling. They are wrapped and steamed in banana leaf or corn husk, so you'll have to unwrap and discard them before eating. Tamales were first developed for the Aztec, Mayan, and Inca tribes who needed nourishing food on the go to take into battle. I love having warm fresh-made tamales for breakfast or snacks. You can find them in almost every street corner across Mexico.

.

𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙨 - Marquesitas is a sweet treat made of rolled crispy crepe. It is then filled with banana (or strawberry), chocolate Nutella spread, and shredded Edam cheese. Watch the street vendor making marquesitas is fun entertainment by itself. You can find this delicious snack in central parks or street corners across Yucatan and Quintana Roo regions. Ah, I totally fall in LOVE with marquesitas on the first bite. Sorry, churros!

The United States of America is home to some most prestigious food cultures. One of the joys of traveling through the USA is discovering the diversity of food that is available. Each region, state, and the city is boasting its own set of unique flavors. Here are five must-try foods in the USA while in the country:

.

𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙠 - Philly Cheesesteak is a sandwich made with thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onion, provolone cheese, and hoagie roll. It was first invented in the city of Philadelphia. Here are some joints to try best Philly Cheesesteaks in the city: Pat’s King of Steak, Geno’s Steak, Philip’s Steak, John’s Roast Pork, and Tony Luke’s.

.

𝘼𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙋𝙞𝙚 - An Apple Pie is a deep pie consisting of several layers of apple slices packed in between two layers of crust. The apples are combined with several spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice) and coated in some sugar. Apple pie originated in England, but now it is an unofficial food of the United States and its signature comfort food. You can find apple pie in many bakeries across the country. Here are some of the best apple pie shops in America: Baker Miller (Chicago, Illinois), Crave Pie Studio (Duluth, Georgia), Dahlia Bakery (Seattle, Washington), Dangerously Delicious Pie (Baltimore, Maryland), Honeypie (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), I Like Pie (Claremont, CA), Pete's Pie Company in New York City. Or you could bake your own apple pie, try this staple recipe. Delicious!

.

𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙢 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙙𝙚𝙧 - Clam chowder is any of several chowder soups in American cuisine containing clams. In addition to clams, common ingredients include diced potatoes, salt pork, and onions. Clam chowder is usually served with saltine crackers or oyster crackers. The dish originated in the Northeastern United States but is now commonly served in restaurants throughout the country. The most common clam chowders are New England white Clam Chowder, which includes milk or cream; Manhattan Red Clam Chowder, which contains tomatoes; and Rhode Island Clear Clam chowder, which omits both.

.

𝘽𝙖𝙧𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙪𝙚 𝙍𝙞𝙗𝙨 - Originated from America, these succulent and smoky barbecue ribs have become one of the most famous dishes in the world. Barbecue ribs can be made from pork ribs or beef ribs. Barbecue pork ribs are the traditional barbecue of a large portion of the United States. Pork is the obvious choice because it tends to be juicier on the bone, allowing the meat to come right off after the grilling process. The secret to great BBQ ribs is grilling, in which the meat is cooked long, slow, and at a low temperature. The ribs are repeatedly smothered with a spicy barbecue sauce, which eventually provides a luscious and spicy external layer. Hmm, yummy! Where to find the best BBQ ribs in the US? Killen's Barbecue (Pearland, Texas), Bogart's Smokehouse (St. Louis, Missouri), Franklin Barbecue (Austin, Texas), Arthur Bryant's (Kansas City, Missouri), Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Que (Decatur, Alabama), Bludso's (Los Angeles, California), and more.

.

𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙨 - State fair is one of the most popular annual summer activities across the county. It's a big thing in the United States. The fair is filled with wacky food combinations and deep-fried everything (hello, deep-fried butter). Honestly speaking, these are not the healthiest foods in the world, but it is super fun. These are some of the most iconic state fair foods that you shouldn't miss:

.

    • 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙣 𝘿𝙤𝙜 - a classic snack of deep-fried battered hot dog on a stick.
    • 𝙁𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙡 𝘾𝙖𝙠𝙚 - a lovely light batter fried until golden brown, topped with powdered sugar. Funnel cake tastes like a cross between donuts and cake.
    • 𝘽𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 - is a dish consisting of one large onion, which is cut to resemble a flower, battered and deep-fried. Served with sauce of your choice.
    • 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙙 - white and yellow cheddar varieties, fried with a beer batter and served with ranch dressing.
    • 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙋𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙨 - are pickle spears or even a whole dill pickle, battered, and fried. And topped with mustard or ranch dressing.
    • 𝘿𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙊𝙧𝙚𝙤𝙨 - Deep frying Oreos completely changes their texture from crunchy to cake-like. The combination of the pancake batter, Oreos, and sweet creme make these treats unforgettable.
    • 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚-𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙤𝙣 - Bacon + chocolate = the ultimate satisfaction. It's typically served on a stick for easier eating.
    • 𝙆𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙣 - regular popcorn popped in a large iron kettle, then mixed with a bit of salt and sugar/honey/molasses for an addictive flavor.
    • 𝙏𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙙𝙤 𝙋𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙚𝙨 - a deep-fried spiral-cut whole potato on a skewer, brushed with various seasonings such as onion, cheese, or honey. This popular street food is originated in South Korea and made its way to the US.

Greenlandic cuisine is something I have yet to experience. Although it is still little known to the outside world, Greenlandic cuisine is surprisingly developed and delectable. It has been greatly influenced by Danish cuisine. The main ingredients are high in protein levels like fish, whales, seabirds, and reindeer. These animals roam free and are allowed to become food sources while keeping the environment safe.

.

Food in Greenland is mostly for survival than pleasure due to the harsh and extreme climate. Understand the local cultures and keep an open mind when trying out Greenlandic dishes for the first time will absolutely help. Here are five authentic must-try foods when visiting Greenland:

.

𝙎𝙪𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙖𝙩 - Suasaat is the national food of Greenland. It is an authentic Greenlandic thick soup made from seal meat (or whale, seabirds, reindeer). Simply seasoned with salt, pepper, onion, and sometimes bay leaf. And to make the broth thick, barley, rice, or potatoes are added during the cooking process. Arctic seal is one of the most popular food sources in Greenlandic cuisine. They hunt seals and use almost every part of the animals.

.

𝙈𝙪𝙠𝙩𝙪𝙠 𝙤𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙠 - It is a well-known Inuit delicacy dish. Mattak is a meal that consists of whale skin and blubber. Yes, you read it correctly. It may sound unappetizing for some people, but I heard it’s a healthy, hearty, and delicious dish high in vitamin C and fish oil.

.

𝘼𝙧𝙛𝙚𝙞𝙠 𝙉𝙞𝙠𝙠𝙪𝙞 𝙤𝙧 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙚 𝙈𝙚𝙖𝙩 - Whale is still symbolic to Greenlandic cuisine and an important meat source. Whale meats are eaten in many different ways like cured, smoked, dried, or raw. Have you tried dried whale meat yet? It is a rather tasty protein-packed snack, similar to beef jerky in the US and Canada. You should try it when traveling in Greenland. Travel Tip: While you can sample whales as a local delicacy, there are strict regulations to take Greenland food products (such as dried whales) out of the country.

.

𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙖 𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙘 𝙇𝙖𝙢𝙗 - Because they are raised free-range, Greenlandic lamb is considered one of the best quality cuts of lamb in the world. The clean and pristine conditions are suitable for how they are bred. And almost all of the lamb meat in Greenland comes from the country's southern regions, beyond the Arctic circle where the green grass grows.

.

𝙏𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙨 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 - It is not exactly a specific dish. Tapas Plate is a sampling of various traditional Greenlandic foods served by many restaurants around the country. This is one of the best ways to taste Greenlandic cuisine. Katuaq Cultural House Cafetuaq in Nuuk serves a tapas plate which includes six specialties such as musk ox pate, dried whale, and scallops, to name a few. Restaurant Mamartus in Ilulissat also offers a generous tapas plate which consists of whale meat, seal soup (mattak), and fried wolffish bites.

The packing guides in this section are essential must-have items for almost every trip. It works for most seasons, except for the colder winter region and winter getaway, which requires a different packing list. Or if you traveled for a special occasion like attending a wedding when you need a particular dress or tux.
